“Motorman” is Manchester-based punk rock band “GETNER”s debut single. It’s a loud, chaotic single that only makes me wish I could be seeing it live. I really liked this song and think its vastly impressive for a debut single. GETNER are a four-piece band, composed of Quentin Wylie, Charles Barber, Will Milton and Ruairi Coyle. Their personal connections to the tops they write about allow for a more realistic and personal touch. It feels more like a battle cry than a history lesson, which sums up this track pretty well.
First impressions were good, I liked the almost cult-like chanting of “motorman”. My first experience with this song was the music video, and frankly I think it’s the optimal way to be introduced to this tune. The shots of the band watching the projector in a dark room were just really cool visually, and the spliced in clip from funerals and explosions carry and deeper message that entwines with the lyrics perfectly. a music video can truly make or break a single and I think that this one made it. it reinforces the overarching message of the song so well and compliments it.
“Motorman” is rooted in Irish history, along with the band
themselves, and takes it’s name from “operation Motorman”, an operation that saw 22,000 British troops reclaim “No go” areas in Northern Ireland. I love a song with history, I think its super cool to use music to spread awareness of past and present political events – and the Irish “troubles” is definitely something the general population should learn more about.
It’s a bonus that along with an important message, GETNER have created an amazing tune worthy of being screamed in the muddy field of any festival. The bass and drums really stuck out to me in this song, they accompany the style of vocals really nicely and serve to pack more of a punch in the song. its overall a very promising debut and I recommend keeping an eye out!You can find GETNER online on Facebook or Instagram – or, even better, catch them live!
