"Billy", a review.

"Billy" is Sports Teams newest single, released on the 7th September 2026. Ive been more than ready for a new sports team era since boys these days wrapped up - purely because this band leave you in constant anticipation of "What next?"

I really loved Boys These Days. I think it was a perfect jumble of commentary and satire that represented the UK as we know it today. Personally, Moving Together is one of my favorite sports team songs of all time. The lyrics always astound me. The issue of getting bored in a relationship is not a unique song premise, but the way it's phrased is - "are we just wasting time doing alright?" sticks with me. The want to actually change the issue and the frustration of it not working feels so real and raw.

Bonnie is also an underrated banger which I would Love to see live at least once.

They had mentioned near the end of the BTD era that they were working on a new album already. Which, if you're a long term fan you'll know isn't crazy. A lot of Gulp was written before deep down happy, and they had intended for it to be an immediate follow-up.

Anyway, all that yap aside, i'm talking about "Billy" today. I thought, what better way to break the Melodify draft huh? Its been a while...

I watched the music video before listening to the song separately which was a great decision. It was so good - i did get major fomo from the part where fans were in, yes. Thanks for asking. The paper mache head is a little horrifying. I except Billy is going to appear in a few fever dreams down the line. I did love it, though I think it was such a cool decision. The Lassie one also did make me laugh, I wasn't really expecting the guy who dresses as one to have a shout out in the song but I cant be too surprised. I really enjoyed the overall vibe of the video if that makes sense, in my opinion music videos are in area in which this band thrive. They are always so entertaining.

The main theme of the song seems to be the bands loathing for the evil milkshake, Tequila Rose. Which I am quite a fan of. And Billy.

I think what I love most about the song is the gritty sort of deep down happy vibe they've returned to. This particular track really reminded of a few off "plant test". It feels very grungey which I enjoy a lot - in my opinion I think sports team thrive in this sound.

Overall I can say with some confidence this is one of my favorite sports team songs of all time. I'm a big "old is better" kinda person with a lot of bands but sports team is not one of them, I think its so British if that makes any sense. Sports team do a great job of encapsulating the general vibe of Britain in their music, like yeah everyone knows a Billy. I probably sound insane. Anyway, I very very highly recommend not only streaming Billy but also catching sports team on one of their many show dates this month.....

Many thanks,
