Last month I had the pleasure of interviewing Home Counties very suddenly and very random at a Smoke and Fire festival I was attending. I had mentioned to my mum while watching them that my friends liked them and I would like to catch them after their set for a contact email so we could chat at a later date. What I wasn't expecting was for my mum to stride up to presenter “Carli Norris” and speak to her about it. I was then taken backstage, and realising I had merely minuets to come up with questions for them. I was terrified.
I didn't really have anything to be scared about because it actually went alright. They were so funny and lovely to chat to. I will admit, due to it being a voice recording I cant identify which member is saying what, with a couple exceptions. Shameful, I know.
A few days after our talk Home Counties announced the release of newest single and album “Humdrum”. It is out on all platforms on the 24th of October, and single Humdrum is available to stream now!!
Of course, we start with introductions
Conor – Guitar
Lois – Synth player and singer
Dan - “Controls the silent member”, Drummer
Barn – Guitar
Bill – bass
Will – synth player and lead singer
Of course, the age old question, Newest single as a meal deal. Lets have it. There was a bit of debate whether or not they should do Spain or Humdrum. They landed on Spain in the end.
Main – Chicken and chorizo sandwich
Snack – Max paprika crisps
Drink – pint of Carling (Fyi that isn't something you can get in a meal deal. Sorry to disappoint anyone.)
Next, my favourite. Would Wallace and Gromit listen to your music?
Straight away, the “Sophisticated one” Gromit would. “I can see Wallace as a radio 6 dad”, was Lois's argument for why he would. I see it!
“Wallace is into Ed Sheeran”
They end up on Gromit would, Wallace wouldn't, which is actually the answer we get almost every time we ask this.
Boring music related one now. Who would have guessed? What's the bands dream/ideal show
Straight away Lois says Glastonbury, the pyramid stage. They then downgrade themselves to Park stage. On a Thursday. They would like talking heads to open, if they ever reunited. Home Counties would also like to do a gig with just their friends bands, Duck Wax, Bull and Jerry are named. They would specifically do Glastonbury on the fallow year.
No more music related ones of course. What's their favourite service station?
This ones takes some debating. On the way, I find out there is a spoons inside a service station. A poor mans Disneyland. I need to go. Beaconsfield, if anyone is interested. Lois suggests “The one in Scotland”- I don't know which one. Pease Pottage is another suggestion, I'm not convinced that's a real place.
“Any services that doesn't have a Greggs” is their least favourite.
They talk about M&S for a bit, how difficult meal deal choices are and a picknick they had recently had. Very lovely Carli tells us about her service station horror story. “I was washing my hands, and you know that its just like the sinks here” (she demonstrates) “I looked up and I thought it was a mirror and there was an old lady in front of me and I went AHHHH” (genuinely screamed and it really scared me)
Everyone jokes about killing the old woman a bit before we move on.
I awkwardly announce the last question, admitting I have no idea what I'm doing. Favourite motorway?
“Defiantly not the M25” is the first answer. Then the M6 toll is mentioned, everyone agreeing its worth the price and the best. “"M4 when everything's going alright”. “I quite like the M11, we can see home”. “"The M25 can get fucked.” Ill tell you what, Home Counties do not mess about motorways and their apparent hatred for them. I respect that.
“I like the M5, Its a good song” Now. This is when I get very excited. I go “Sports team!” and promote our article. Smooth. “They’re visiting our local pub at the minuet – they must have moved there .. we always get really nervous” I would too. They're very scary.
We finish up now. Thanks so much to home counties for speaking with us – truly a pleasure. The loveliest people.
Make sure to stream humdrum when its out – we will be! This interview will also be uploaded on our YouTube so you can listen to the audio! :-)
Cheers x
