Nat Dempsy’s new single “In the dim light” is a mellow indie folk track that takes you on a journey exploring the intricate feelings of missing younger days. From the first listen I was shocked to fine out how much I loved it – I don’t usually dabble in the genre Nat finds himself in, yet I was pleasantly surprised.

From the jump the textured guitar in the opening is something I noticed almost immediately, it hooked me to the song fast. Dempsy’s vocals flow beautifully with aforementioned guitar to create a unique and captivating first chorus.

The slow build of the other instruments almost takes you by surprise, not noticing the drums until about halfway through. They slot in so perfectly its almost impressive. The drums are something that stood out to me and I wrote in my notes, they’re consistent, adding a rhythm to tap your foot to, and only change the speed up or slow down the track.

I really liked the lyrics, I think they do the meaning behind the song justice as Dempsy intended –  “to be chasing your past is to be ever blind” stuck out to me specifically. I thought it captured the vibe so perfectly, not to mention how it’s sung only adds to it.

Every section of this song no matter how small works very well together in crafting an easy to listen to yet melancholic tune that’ll stick in your head for a while after the first listen.

Nat Dempsy has such a nice voice, it’s not something I always point out in my reviews, but it felt right to here.

The lyrics are relatable, allowing some connection with the listener and artist. I always love relating to a song, so it only added to the list of positives I have to say about this tune.

Overall, if you take anything from this review its that you should start listening to Nat Dempsy as soon as possible. Such an underrated gem, that I have no doubts faces a bright future. (PS My mum said it was a great song too)

Thanks for reading,
