Medium Machine Review

Medium Medicine is the newest release from Sports Team, a fun and energetic single that was previously exiled from album “Boys These Days”.

On the first listen of this tune I knew it would become a favourite of mine and many other fans. It was so light and classic sports team I couldn’t help but smile for the entire playthrough. I’m not trying to be corny this is true I got really really weird looks on the bus because of it.

The lyrics are the first thing I noticed, a twisted version of a love song where the singer is denying caring about someone but saying how they care about their “friends” “pets” “family”. To me this feels like the “character” is trying to do some weird reverse psychology, playing hard to get as you will – but then again, I think I might be looking too deep into it. I have for the past 24 hours, if I’m not careful this could very well turn into an essay. The line about having cocktails with the “usual” twats was reminiscent of unreleased song Plastic Plastic off plant test, mentioning drinking pink gin. I don’t know what the correlation really is, but it got me thinking. What more do you want from me.

The obvious backing vocals from Rob were very noticeable at first, with a fuzzy voice filter layered over them. Honestly, I think it ties the chorus together perfectly. the guitars are also worth mentioning, the almost minuet long guitar solo from Henry was incredibly impressive and I don’t think the band allow him to show off like that often enough. The drums and bass were also, as usual, incredible – the drums being softer in this song to match the tone of the lyrics was such a perfect detail.

Overall, though I don’t believe this is the start of another album rollout (at least I hope not. I haven’t recovered from moving together or bonnie, haven’t even begun to get over the whole album), I think this marks a brilliant new era for the band. The single reminds me a lot of Getting Better and Light Industry, the best (subjectively) songs on “Gulp”. Medium medicine has done nothing but secure my excitement for the upcoming Boys These Days UK tour – which starts very soon. Get your tickets!!

Bring on Portsmouth – and also Brixton if I manage to persuade the band to put me on GL. To be decided.

Cheers,

Eloise x
