As most of my close friends and family know, I have had the worst obsession with indie-rock band "sports team" for the better part of 3 years. I have spent full days just sat listening to their albums on a constant loop. At one point, I remember genuinely not listening to anything but Deep Down Happy for a week straight.
So, of course, when the number one (Statistically proven) Sports Team fan/ proud owner of a fan account joins a music magazine...only one thing comes to mind.
I waited until a week or two before seeing them at an in-store in Brighton to DM the lead singer, Alex Rice, and beg for a chat. As usual, I was left completely on read. But did I let that stop me? Absolutely not. I'm a very annoying person.
I waited another week before messaging Henry, lead guitarist. excitedly (and obviously as you're reading this) I got a response.
For convenience, henry suggested over email would work best. so he entrusted me with their actual email. proper fever dream. Also not as big of a deal as it felt at the time.
And now we're here. A month later because I have demolished my GCSE's and have actual time on my hands. Please enjoy Melodify asking stupid questions to Sports Team.
1) What would "Boys These Days" be as a meal deal, and where would it be from?
"Festive sandwich, Peparami, Iced tea - late night discount aisle, St pancras Boots"
An incredibly fitting response, I would say.
2) Favourite Sports Team song to play live?
"Stanton"
An expected answer. Classic tune where Alex gets to skip around on stage screaming. Always a fun time.
3) Would Wallace and Gromit listen to Sports Team?
"Wallace is quite partial to brass compositions on that phonograph of his if I remember - I think the sultry horns layered on numerous songs Boys These Days would nicely accompany a slice of Wensleydale"
I did not realise I was asking people who knew the source material that well. I have zero idea what a "phonograph" is and am still very confused after research.
4) Favourite service station?
"Moto Medway, en route to Margate. As you take your first bite of Gregg's after a long tour, you know you're nearly home."
5) What's your ideal show? Support, venue ect.
"We've been lucky enough to have some amazing support over the years...Wet Leg and Courting at Brixton Academy; English Teacher among others at our Margate Bus Trip festival; Fat Dog, Adult DVD and Mary In The Junkyard more recently. Working on pulling some more magic names from our magic hat for this Autumn's UK run."
By magic names I can only assume they mean Emergency break, Of course. Personal favourites of mine.
6) Favourite B-side/unreleased song?
"Suburban Massacre, a lost demo recorded with Winter Nets producer Dave McCracken."
7) Favourite "Boys These Days" song?
"Maybe When We're 30. Our only song that makes grown men cry."
True fact. My dad weeps at the first note every time.
8) Favourite motorway?
"M5, I guess?"
Don't know why I asked that. stupid question really
9) Worst show you've ever done?
"?? Please contact our customer services department if we EVER miss a note or fall below your levels of expectation"
Alright. Thank you??
10) What's your favourite pastime while traveling on tour?
"Noise cancelling headphones"
Incredible.
Thank you so much to Henry Young for setting this up, and to Sports Team as a whole for entertaining this. Truly a group of wonderful people who I'm more than happy to throw money at.
Boys these days is available to stream on any/all music platforms and I highly suggest you do it - even my dad says its one of the best albums he's listened to.
Cheers xx
