The Pill, female fronted band from the Isle Of Wight, released their debut EP on the 22nd of May. They are thrilling, danceable and, overall a welcome burst of feminine energy to the current music scene. This EP is one of my absolute favourites, so let’s go into my thoughts on each song.
POSH.
Posh is the only ‘brand new’ (at the release of ‘The EP’) track on the lineup. Teased on their Instagram and played at shows, it is a mockery of ‘only dating boys who come from money.’ Jumping straight in with a fast-paced, exciting guitar sound, this song's enticing rhyming scheme keeps you hooked. Hilariously witty, deliciously racy and surprisingly fun, it is a standout track. ‘If I ask nice, will you put me in your will? Caviar, oysters, ??? and a quickie.’
Bale of Hay
Bale of Hay was released as a single in 2024, the Pill’s first born. Another scrumptious, naughty track written about Lily’s identity as a ‘pink faced secret ginger.’ They have this unique sound, an explosive enthusiasm. I admire their ability to be so powerful with such sensuality. Bale of Hay is a gleeful, memorable track, the repetitive tune of the verses and guitar easy to groove to. Although it is one of my least played, it is still exceptional, and that’s Lily and Lottie for you. You want it, they got it.
Scaffolding Man
Scaffolding man is another original Pill single from October 2024. Housing their original, sultry themes of a man working in scaffolding ‘seeing me in the bath, through the kitchen through the glass’. It is their opener for the live show, perfection with a melodic rhythm and hysterical lyrics. With their classic pause in the guitar, they make you giggle constantly with lines like ‘I hope he likes what I am wearing. Is that a wedding ring he’s bearing?’ with a gorgeous little synth backing. Passing into a dramatic guitar solo, this is a standout piece from the Pill.
Problem
Problem is their most recent single. Switching from the comically erotic theming, this song is sung with upset over a girl who’s got that classic ‘Problem.’ Heavily relatable, scream-able and a proper meltdown track, Problem is one of my dearest. ‘I know why’s she got, a Problem…’ is a heavily used phrase, being used listing things this fictional woman has a problem with. ‘I know why she’s got something I don’t want’ is the backbone of the heavy chorus, a classic rock song about that one bitch who thinks she’s better than everyone else. We all know her, we all hate her, we all dance to this song in a break away from their sex-driven sound.
Money Mullet.
Money Mullet is one of the girls' most popular. Sung on the topic of insufferable men with mullets, it serves as a heady reminder of the petulant species that is the man. A mockery of a song, it is as powerful
as it is wonderful. I’ve found that in every single The Pill song they slow down for a bridge section - and more often than not they bounce back with even heavier guitar usage. Never trust a man with a mullet. I stand by the taunting of Lily and Lottie.
Woman Driver
The close to this 6 song, only just making 15 minutes EP is a great one. Using stereotypes against women (that being the common typecast that women can’t drive well) in a comical AND empowering manner is something I've only seen few perform successfully. And they’ve nailed it with this. A pause to sing ‘I’m sorry (she’s sorry) but I’m just a girl (she’s just a girl)’ is probably my favourite thing the song has to offer. The ‘on-and-off’-ness of the instrumental to their verses makes for an entertaining listen.
Overall, I think this is PERFECTION in 6 songs. They have, so to speak, captured lightning in a bottle with their impeccable power and utter disregard for every single constraint on women in the music industry. I love this EP, but the one thing I will say is that it lacks a little diversity in songs. They have a very similar sound going in every track, except for maybe Posh. Personally, I couldn’t care less. Having seen The Pill twice, opening up the Hype List tour in Nottingham and then opening for HotWax at Where Else (I only really went to see them..) I highly, highly recommend their live show.
Thank you for reading, it means a lot to us!!
